7/2024 update-- taking applications for CPM apprenticeship

Am I hiring?

My midwife work is my craft, my art, my flow. It's unique to me, and as I also honor that your work is unique to you, I know that's a rare synergy where we find our sisters in our work, such that we love being at birth together in a way that just fits.

So the answer is both "No" and "Yes".

I'm always looking for that right midwife or apprentice that resonates and can become a part of my team or the next generation of midwives.

Seeking partner
Midwife

An ideal partner midwife would be invested full-time in the homebirth midwife life. It could be part-time hours, but she is "in" when it comes to prioritizing to be a homebirth midwife. This means that she knows she'll have times when she is the primary midwife on-call for days and need to be available 24/7. We'd both take times of being on-call more and then times of being off for long periods. Most months we'd be just splitting births, alternating, or making a schedule of preferred days...whichever works. We'd make sure each other gets out of town regularly and enjoys life. We'd book a birth schedule that fits our lives and priorities, knowing that the goal is to be able to serve birthing women and not have gaps in midwife availability.

Midwife Qualifications

Certified Nurse Midwife, 4+ yrs, with home or birth center experience, comfortable and ready to practice independently.

The person I am looking for as a partner midwife would be at a point in her career where she is making a turn toward her true life path as a holistic midwife and she is stepping into it with all she has.

She'll be joining to learn everything. So much goes into the craft of running a midwifery practice. Clients honor the work we provide with good compensation, and this is available as a reward for your investment in doing what it takes to be available for them, and also do the behind-the-scenes work.

I don't think I'd know immediately who the right person would be, so I'd have to hear your story and we'd have to decide how we'd spend that first year integrating you and allowing things to naturally adapt. Therefore, reach out with your story and interest.

Also seeking
Birth Assistants &Apprentices

Over the past 4 years of solo practice I've had both CNM mentees and CPM apprentices, and for a long stretch, just had my sister-birtherworker Mary as my trained birth assistant. Since Mary's retirement, I've had a schedule of birth assistants, with the CNM that mentored under me the last year being the most committed.

I believe the best thing for birthing women is to know anyone who would be at her birth. Therefore, I am actively seeking an available person to become my next apprentice and birth assistant. The CPM apprentice fits the model well because she understands she is focusing on learning the craft and needing to be available for prenatal days and births. The CNM apprentice benefits greatly from learning the wisdom of holistic midwifery practice, but needs to demonstrate the value she brings to my practice and the clients in her request for mentorship. The PRN birth assistant fills the gap of needs when I am needing an assistant and don't have available anyone who has been apprenticing and already knows the client.

Birth assistant Qualifications

The best births assistants know the language of natural birth and anticipate needs.  The quality of your skills in assisting the client and the midwife doesn't have a lot to do with clinical background, but in your innate skills of how you operate. The rest is trainable.

  • Committed to being available "on call" for births
  • NRP

Apprentice Qualifications

I am open to any form of midwifery apprenticeship that offers a balanced energy exchange to my practice. For whatever path you want to gleam midwifery wisdom, it is yours. [This doesn't mean I'll sign off on your skills as a midwife without you receiving proper didactic & skills education/testing though!]

  • Committed to attend 2+ prenatal clinics/mo (Thurs)
  • Committed to being available "on call" for births >50% time
  • Actively learning the trade through clinical textbooks, coursework and recommended sources
